Takapuna Retirement Village Renovation
A Comfortable Home Designed Around Everyday Living
This Takapuna project involved a complete update of a retirement village unit for a new resident in her 90s. The brief was straightforward: make the home warmer, easier to use, safer to move around, and more enjoyable to live in, without making it feel clinical or overly modified.
The renovation focused on practical improvements throughout the unit, combining accessibility upgrades with a fresh, contemporary finish.

Improving Warmth and Energy Efficiency
One of the first priorities was improving the comfort of the home throughout the year.
New double-glazed joinery was installed to help reduce heat loss and limit cold draughts through the existing openings. This created a noticeably more comfortable interior while also bringing the windows and doors up to a more modern standard.
For an older resident, maintaining a consistent indoor temperature was an important part of the overall renovation rather than simply an aesthetic upgrade.
A Safer and More Practical Bathroom
The bathroom was redesigned to make everyday use easier while maintaining a clean residential feel.
A level-access shower removed the need to step over a raised threshold, while strategically positioned grab rails provided additional support where it was most useful. The vanity and surrounding layout were also planned to allow straightforward movement through the space.
New tiling was installed throughout, giving the bathroom a durable finish that is easy to maintain while keeping the space bright and modern.
The result is an accessible bathroom that feels considered and comfortable rather than institutional.
Updating the Kitchen and Interior
The existing kitchen was replaced with a new kitchen renovation designed around simple, practical everyday use.
Fixtures, fittings, storage, and working areas were selected with ease of use in mind, while the updated cabinetry and finishes gave the room a much cleaner contemporary appearance.
New flooring was also installed through the home, helping tie the renovated spaces together and giving the interior a consistent finish.
Creating More Useful Storage
The existing porch was enclosed as part of the renovation, creating additional protected storage space for the resident.
Rather than leaving the area exposed to the weather, the new enclosure made better use of the available footprint and provided a practical place for everyday items without taking space away from the main living areas.
The Finished Takapuna Home
This project was less about changing the size of the property and more about making the existing home work better for the person living in it.
Improved glazing helps keep the home warmer, the bathroom provides greater confidence and accessibility, the new kitchen is easier to use, and the enclosed porch adds useful storage that was previously missing.
Together, these changes have created a comfortable, modern home that supports independent living while still feeling welcoming and personal.
